About Memphis, TN - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Memphis is well known for its art, music, culture, food and own special brand of Southern fun. Many famous musicians have grown up in the city. Those who did not have the luck to be born there hopped on planes and trains to get there, starting in the middle of the century. It has become a musical Mecca. However, the biggest star from Memphis is most certainly Elvis Presley. The town’s obsession for Elvis is very real and each year the crowds gather outside of Graceland in the heat of August to pay respect to their king.
Its musical history is positive but Memphis has also had some dark times. During the 1960s, the city was at the center of civil rights issues and many Black citizens began to stand up for their rights. They were looking for equal pay and fair treatment. Being such an important part of the movement, it made sense that Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. should visit in support of a local workers’ protest. However, he was assassinated in the Lorraine Motel. He was killed by a sniper on April 4, 1968 and many African Americans in the city rioted. Today, the motel where Dr. King lost his life can be toured and many feel that Memphis is an important part of the Civil Rights Movement and its history. No matter the season, or the time of year, snow or sleet or sunshine – the Lorraine Motel is a must-see for anyone interested in African American history.
Of course, Graceland is an absolutely iconic attraction which draws thousands and thousands of people each year. Elvis’ former home is a modern day time capsule of a different era. His opulent and luxurious home has become more than a home, but a symbol. It has been left just as it was and the décor and the vibe are uniquely the star’s own style. He had a jungle room, for example. This unusual mansion is an absolute shrine to the deceased singer and the many fans of his music who gather daily take great comfort and joy in seeing and interacting with his former home. Graceland is the perfect attraction to check out should you find yourself in Memphis in the winter when the weather is chilly and there may be snow, or cold winds.
